The historic first title - U12 FC, 1983

Meath Chronicle:

Simonstown Gaels take title at last

Simonstown Gaels..........................1-7
Dunboyne.......................................0-7

Simonstown Gaels won the first championship in the club's history at Navan's Pairc Tailteann on Tuesday evening of last week when they defeated Dunboyne in the under-12 F.C. final replay.

With Brendan Rooney and Seamus Byrne on top at midfield, however, it seemed for much of the opening half that Dunboyne would take the title. Points from Sean Deens, Derek Hannaway, Rooney and Gary Walsh enabled Dunboyne to lead by 0-4 to 0-1 nearing the end of the first quarter, but Duncan Byrne fired home a cracking goal to put Simonstown on level terms.

Dunboyne led by 0-7 to 1-3 at the interval at which stage a wasteful Simonstown attack had kicked 10 wides. However, they made up for this in the second half when they held the losers scoreless.

Gareth Conachey and Byrne pointed to edge them in front before their selectors made a shrewd move. They switched Conor Clynch and Conachey in the half-forward line and introduced Derek Johnson for Paul McCabe.

Conachey and Paul Craig - a delightful effort with an overhead kick - completed Simonstown's tally and although Dunboyne made several attacks before the finish, fine defensive work by Philip Traynor, Brendan Keelan, David Johnson, Adrian Shanley and Damien Carolan enabled the Gaels to hold out.

Owen Connolly, Alan Kavanagh, Clynch, Graham Cooke, Conachey, Byrne and Paul Craig were others to impress for the winners while Ken Curtis, Ray Kelly, Rooney, Byrne, Gerry Walsh and Deens showed up well for Dunboyne.

Scorers:
