The seniors produced a brave performance in round 5 of the SFC against Blackhall Gaels in Walterstown this evening, Wednesday, but it wasn't enough to get the win they needed to advance to the knock-out stages of the championship.
The team in sky blue were left to rue a missed penalty by Wayne McCarthy in the 46th minute after Seamus Kenny was fouled which, if converted, would have put them 1-9 to 1-7 ahead.
Blackhall responded with two points on the trot and managed to keep their noses in front until the first minute of extra-time when impressive teenager Sean Tobin converted a free from the right hand side to level the game.
The concession of a goal in the 22nd minute left the Shane O'Neill captained outfit trailing by 1-5 to 0-5 at the break.
Niall McMahon, Michael O'Rourke, Paul Meade, Shane O'Rourke, who finished with five points to his credit, and O'Neill were others to play particularly well.
There was some consolation for Des Lane's charges, however, as the point gained sees them leapfrog Walterstown in the group on score difference and, therefore, avoid a relegation play-off.
A minute's silence was observed prior to throw-in in memory of the late Joe Kelly.
