Simonstown registered a hard fought victory over Ratoath on Monday evening in Simonstown.
Simonstown started brightly with points from Sinéad Mooney and Evelyn Ayelobola following some good build up play from Lana Wardick, Eunice Ayelobola and Ella Martin. Ratoath then hit a purple patch and registered a few fine scores from Minor star Fiona McNerney assisted by current Senior star Katie Newe. Having lost their way a little Simonstown received a lifeline when Tara Berrigan was hauled down in the square and hit the onion bag from the resulting penalty to leave the half time score at 2-06 to 1-06 in favour of Ratoath.
Simonstown began the second half playing better football with Laura Mc Cabe, Laura McEnery , Orla Conlon, Leanne Harris and Aoife Farrell on top in defence and supplying good ball to forwards Alannah Lyons , Caoimhe Leddy, Meghan Gorman and Sinéad Mooney who finished the evening with an impressive personal tally of 3-03. In the closing minutes Tara Berrigan converted her second penalty of the night to put the result beyond doubt. Mollie Byrne put in another good shift at midfield with partner Rachel Abu impressing in her new midfield roll winning a lot of ball. Simonstown are due to play Royal Gaels next Monday away in Round 3 and a win would almost guarantee them a place in the semi-finals.
