Simonstown Ladies - Update (April 2003)
SImonstown Ladies' season has just kicked off. The big news this season
is the arrival of new coaches, Padraig Farrell and Gareth Burns. Padraig
hails from Longford and Gareth from Galway. Both are former students
of St Pat's Teaching College in Drumcondra, Dublin. They are now living
in Navan and both teach at St Oliver's Primary School. Both Padraig
and Gareth have had successful terms in coaching the St Pat's Ladies
College team. Simonstown Ladies would like to wish them every success
in their venture with the Ladies.
Former manager Brendan Egleston has taken a 'Career Break' so to speak.
No doubt Brendan will continue with his support of the Ladies and we
wish hm a very well earned break. Brendan has been with the Ladies since
they formed almost seven years ago.
The Ladies got off to a good start in the Division 1 League against
2002 champions Seneschalstown. Although they went down by 2-11 to 1-8,
they had one of their best performances to date. It is with great excitement
that we look forward to our next challenge against Summerhill. This
game is to be played on Wednesday April 2nd 2003.
The first round of the championship is a home fixture for the Ladies
and will be played on Monday April 7th 2003. This will be one of the
games of the round and Simonstown ladies are eager to get revenge for
their defeat in the league. Good luck girls.
Best wishes to new captain Mary Gormley and vice-captain Jackie Shiels.
Keep an eye on this page for results and news about SIMONSTOWN LADIES.

Simonstown Ladies - A Brief History
There had been ladies football activity in Simonstown in the late seventies/early
eighties but it had fallen by the wayside up until being revived in
the early nineties.
Simonstown Ladies Gaelic Football club was started in 1994/'95 by Brendan
Egleston. Three local girls were the first to ask for a club to be formed;
they were Lorraine Dunne, Elaine Laverty and Kathleen McCabe. The then
Simonstown chairman John Howard and treasurer Eric Brady were two of
the people who helped the club get off it's feet.
While starting up in 1994, Simonstown ladies did not compete in competitions
until April 1995. Our first game was against Skryne. That first ear
we competed in the Ladies Division 3 League and the Junior B championship.
We also competed in the U-16 championship. Although not winning a lot,
the initial ground was broken and Simonstown Gaels had a ladies club.
The next few years were spent building up underage and senior ladies
teams. 1996 saw the club competing at all levels from U-12 to senior.
It was during 1996 also that the first piece of silverware was won by
the club; the inaugural U-12 County blitz competition.
Nineteen-ninety-eight was by far the most successful year in the club's
short history. A culmination of four years hard work led to the winning
of the Junior B championship and the Division 3 League. The U-16 championship
was also captured that year while the U-12 reached the final of their
championship and the U-14s won the Feile Blitz competition.
Nineteen-ninety-nine was another successful year for Simonstown Ladies.
The U-14 team were to prove the success of the year winning the championship
in style against a formidable Seneschalstown team. This team also won
the County Blitz competition and progressed to represent Simonstown
and Meath in the All-Ireland Feile Blitz competition which was held
in Ennis, Co. Clare.
This year proved to be one of the most frustrating for the club as the
U-16s, Minors and U-21s all reached their individual championship finals
but ended up on the losing side in each.
The adult team suffered a similar fate, qualifying for the finals of
the Intermediate and Division 2 finals but still there was no trophies
to show for all their efforts. There was some comfort, however, in the
fact that we had gained promotion to Division 1 for the first time.
The year 2000 was to be a quiet onefor us. The U-16s have reached the
final of their competition but due to the success of the county U-16s
and the bad weather this final has yet to be played.
Over the years Simonstown have been very well represented at all levels
on county teams. Jackie Shiels, Fionan Feeney and Celestine Keaveney,
for instance, were members of the Meath team which won the All-Ireland
title last year.
The club are very proud of all those who have represented the county,
these include:
Emma Wall, Cathy-Ann McManamon, Lauren Gavin, Laura McManamon, Eve Wardick,
Grainne Harrington, Jane Brady, Kerry O'Brien, Sarah Breen, Michelle
O'Brien, Sinead Flanagan, Sinead Dooley, Lisa Moroney, Lisa Lyons.
