About Simonstown Gaels GFC

In 1965 Muhammad Ali was Heavyweight Champion of the World, Lyndon Johnson was in the White House, Sean Lemass was Taoiseach, Martin Quinn was Meath’s full-back, Mick O’Connell was the star man for Kerry, Colm O’Rourke was in high infants over in Leitrim, and Arkle won his second Gold Cup.

Just outside of Navan, meanwhile, a group of lads, led by Joe Clarke of Simonstown and Jimmy Lane of St. Mary’s Park, were making a big decision to start a new football club. They had to get a few locals back from Kilberry and Gibbstown, there were a few ex-O’Mahony’s available, and there were a few other young lads unattached and ‘mad’ for action.

Div 1 Points shared in Gibbstown   Simonstown 0—10 (0—4)    Wolfe Tones 0—10 (0—8)       Simonstown and near neighbours  Wolfe Tones  shared the Div 1  League points   on a dry !!!  windy  Saturday  evening in Gibbstown. With both teams  near the bottom of League table, they set up to limit each others scoring opportunities. Tones with wind assistance chalked four  up points ( 2fs) while David McKeever replied for the visitors to leave Tones leading 0—4 to 0—1 after twelve minutes. Jimmy Heaney  rode several takles to split the posts  and wing back  David McKeever surged forward to record his second point to see  scoreboard reading  Tones  0—5   Simonstown 0—3 after twenty minutes. Tones with aperiod of dominance then tagged on three points (2fs) and full back Stephen Moran for Simons completed the first half scoring. The  Tones defense set up( although they wind assisted) made it difficult for visiting forwards to get room to score with the result  that 0—3 of Simons first half total came from the backs. At the break Tone 0—8 Simons  0—4.      Padraig McKeever (inj) was replaced at half by Shane Barry and the omens didnt good with Sims scorer in chief in the dugout and Sean Tobin also on the  injured list. His team mate  David  McKeever at wing  back went on to register four points from play.  David McKeever with two points form play and a Ben Hoey free left Tones leading by two 0—9 to 0—7 with twenty second half minutes gone. Aaron Farrelly  after earning the free himself   converted  to leave just a point between them  Tones  0—9    Sims 0—8 after twenty nine minutes. Shane  Barry  landed the equaliser form forty five metres  out on thirty one minutes. From the resultant kick out and Tones broke down field and recorded a point (their second of the half—the other was a free)to see them 0—10 to 0—9 ahead . Simonstown gained possession from kick out  and worked the ball up field. Shane Barry again landed a massive point from forty metres out with   thirty four minutes  played. A very exciting and entertaining second half as Simonstown clawed their way to a draw.  Final Score ; Simons 0—10 Wolfe Tones 0—10.  \***\*\*Simonstown\*\*** Rob Burlingham, Mark Devlin, Stephen Moran (0—1), Aaron Chinchilla,...Brian McGrath, Josh Carolan, David McKeever (0—4)....Briain Conlon, Tadgh Hanrahan,...Shane McEnery, Ben Hoey (0—1)f, Jimmy Heaney(0—1),...Luke Caffrey, Padraig McKeever, Aaron Farrelly(0—1)f ** Subs\*\*\*** Shane Barry (0**—**2)/ P.McKeever..Peter Duffy/ L.Caffrey..David Kavanagh/S.McEnery.. ** Extd Panel; ** Liam Purvis, Jack Melia. **\*\*\*      Wolfe Tones;   **Ciaran Gallagher,..Conor Sheppard, Shane Glynn, Sean Kendal...Bruach O Fionnagain, Dan O Neill, Gary McFadden...Alan Callaghan, Sean Penny,..Alan O Laiguedain, Stephen Sheppard, Adrian Crawford...Kyle Moran, .Saran O Fionnagain, Oisin Martin...

Feis Cup Final Match Report

Simonstown  0—9 (0-3) Donaghmore /Ashbourne 1—10 (0—3).        The light rain that  started to fall some 30 minutes before throw-in led to a very cautious ..dont conceed scores ---first  half of the 2024 Feis Cup Final played in Simonstown on Wednesday night.     Eight minutes were on the clock before Sean Tobin converted a 45 for the hosts. Aaron Farrelly after some nice footwork sent over to put Simons  0—2 to 0—0 at the end of first quarter. Darragh O Sullivan split the posts for Ashbourne with a long range point. Kevin Fenton added another and the teams were level 0—2 each after twenty two minutes. Ashboune then took the lead when Conor Carton drove from midfield and scored again from long range. Simonstowns Aaron Farrelly on the stroke of half time levelled matters with his second point from distance to have the teams level 0—3  to 0—3.  Packed defences were limiting scoring opportunites from close range and goal chances were  non existant. Even at this stage it looked as if who ever got the goal by  good play or good fortune would win the game.            Tobin again sent over a free from distance and Zak Thornton converted for  O Moores men. Shane McEnery point a free for the Navan men while Sean Curran replied with  a great score on the run to leave the sides level at 0--5 to 0--5 ten minutes into second half.  Simonstown went two in front through Aaron Farrelly and Padraig McKeever free at the end of third quarter. James Redmond  amd goalkeeper  Andy Colgan with a free  again saw the teams level at 0—7  each  with twenty two gone in sceond half.    The Navan went ahead again when a ball lofted  into the square was met with Mark Devlins fist and just went over the bar---a few inches lower and would have been a goal  to them 0—8 to 0—7 up.  The goal came at the other end  as an effort for a point dropped short in the conditions  as Robbie Bulingham saved but a rebound  was steered to the net by Andrew Tormey  to put Ashbourne two up.  Scoreboard now read Ash  1—7    Simons 0—8.  Padraig McKeever sent over to leave a point between them. Simonstown  were pilling pressure in search of  a  leveller but were hit with counter attacks and points from Bryan Menton an Andrew Colgan free and Sean Tyrell. These late Ashbourne scores left the Feis Cup  and first silverware of 2024  heading to Ashboune. Eight years ago in  early September  2016 Ashbourne also beat us in Feis Cup Final in Dunganny after extra time.--Ten weeks later we beat Donaghmore /Ashbourne  1—14 to 0—8  in County Final to claim our first ever Keegan Cup.  A great achievement  and expierence for this   particular young team to reach to a Final. Well done to manager Gordon Ward,Eanna Donoghue,Joe Lyons and Keith Brady.  Hope we can repeat the feat and  bring the Keegan Cup back to North Navan again this year.     **Simonstown;** Robbie Burlingham,.. Simonstown v Summerhill, Div 1 League

Simonstown 3—8 (0—6)   Summerhill 2—15.(0—7)       A goal with the last kick of game  ensured  Summerhill took the  Div 1 League points on offer  in  Simonstown on Tuesday night. The hosts started brightly with Briain Conlon,Tadgh Hanrahan winning ball  at midfield and directing their passes to Luke Caffrey and Aaron Farrelly who  had the better of their markers  and were being  fouled.  Padraig McKeever converted two frees and Ben Hoey one. Luke Caffrey himself clipped over from a mark and Simonstown  were in front 0—4 to 0—1 after ten minutes. Sean Tobin  and Josh Carolan were late withdrawals due to injury for the Navan men. Aaron Farrelly wriggled free from several Summerhill defenders and slotted over. The Hill then had a period dominance and with Barry Dardis on free taking duty  (3fs)they  went into a 0—7 to 0—5 lead by the twenty eight minute.  McKeever with a free completed the first half scoring to see Summerhill leading  0—7 to 0—6  at the break.   The second started with good Simonstown play as Luke Caffrey set  up Aaron Farrelly whose shot was saved by the goalie but the  inrushing  Padraig McKeever finish the rebound to the net to put Simons 1—6 to 0—8 in front four minutes. The Hill levelled with a point from play. A low ball  into the Summerhill square was met by Luke Caffrey  and  he set up  Farrelly who finished  to the net  to put Simons 2—6 to 0—9 in front with thirty six minutes on the clock. Three minutes later Summerhill were level when Kevin Ryan bursting through the middle collected an astute pass and  sent a rocket to net. The momentum was now with the Hill and they added five  points including a free and 45 while P McKeever clipped over a free and Ben Hoey a mark  see the scorebaord reading  Summerhill leading by three 1—14.  Simonstown 2—8  with twenty three minutes on clock. A centre into the Summerhill square was met  by  Aaron Farrelly among a clutter of defenders and he fisted to the net and the teams were   level  Sims 3—8  Sumhill  1—14 with four minutes left. A Summerhill attacked yielded a point and as Simonstown  threw everyone into attack to find an equaliser, a sharp counter attack by the Hill resulted in a goal by corner back John Lavelle with the last kick of the game and leave four points  between the teams. Final Score Simons 3—8  Summerhill  2—15 . **Simons;**   R.Burlingham.., Mark Devlin,  Stephen Moran, Aaron Chinchilla,..Brian McGrath, Briain Conlon, David Mckeever...Shane barry,  Tadgh Hanrahan,...Shane McEnery,  Ben Hoey(0—2)45,M...Jimmy Heanay...Luke Caffrey(0—1)M, Padraig McKeever(1—4)4f, Aaron Farrelly(2—1)... **Subs;**  Eoghan Gough/S.McEnery..David Kavanagh/T.Hanrahan...Peter Duffy/L.Caffrey.. **\*\*\*\*\*Summerhill;**  Sean Muddiman,...Ben Moran, Iarla Hughes, John Lavelle,...Padraig Geraghty, Jack Davies,   Jamie O Shea...Adam Flanagan, Diarmuid McCabe,... David Larkin, Kevin Lyons, Kevin Ryan...Conor Frayne, Sean Dalton, Darry Dardis...
