Simonstown Ladies almost achieve 3 from 3:
On Sunday evening 22nd April Simonstown Ladies Division 5 team travelled to Baconstown hoping to make it three from three for their third league game against Na Fianna.
The team that took to the field was a much changed team than that of previous outings as a few U16 girls stepped up.
Simonstown, playing against a strong wind, started brightly with a well taken goal. Anu Bologan, who following one of her trademark runs, put the ball in the back of the Na Fianna net. This was followed soon after by a great point scored by the ever industrious Allanagh Lyons.
Following this Na Fianna opened their account with a point scored from a free and quickly followed with a goal. For the rest of the half each team made the most of their opportunities and Simonstown went in at half time up on a score line of 4-1 to 2-3. The Simonstown tally was greatly helped by hat-trick hero Naoise de Graaff who made the most of her opportunity playing at No 14. Ellie Lane operating at 11 for this game put in a huge effort winning ball and passing it off quickly to the inside forwards. During the 1st half the backs and the mid-field pairing of Aoife Farrell and Eve Wardick worked hard to keep Na Fianna, who were aided by the wind, under control and special mention has to go to Leanne Harris who had her hands full with the Na Fianna full forward but rose to the challenge admirably.
As was the case in the Ashbourne game a few days earlier Simonstown in the 2nd half playing with the wind found it hard to get into scoring opportunities and Na Fianna who employed a sweeper to stop the Simonstown attack started to capitalise and got some great scores. Simonstown in the 2nd half only scored 3 points, 2 scored from play by the mid-fielders and one scored from a free by Ellie Lane.
Laura McCabe in goals had another good game and worked tirelessly throughout.
With 5 mins to go proceedings were all square at 4-3 to 3-6 when Eve Wardick made a huge run forward with the ball and popped over a super point. It looked like Simonstown had achieved 3 from 3. However shortly after Na Fianna worked the ball into their forwards where they won a questionable free which was converted and soon after the game finished in a draw.
A draw on the day was a fair result as the 1st half belonged to Simonstown whereas the 2nd half fully belonged to Na Fianna. Once again it was good to see that the team at the end when under pressure dug deep and hung in there to ensure that they did not concede the game.
The subs Megan Gorman, Eimear Smyth, Rachel Abu, Ella Martin, Laura McEnery and Evelyn Ayelabola all worked hard when introduced.
Final Score Simonstown 4-4, Na Fianna 3-7
