U12 B Division 6 - Round 4
Monday 1st May in Simonstown.
Simonstown v Navan O’Mahonys
Half time: Simonstown 1 - 03 - Navan O Mahonys 1 - 01
Full time: Simonstown 3 - 05 - Navan O Mahonys 1 - 03
With 2 wins in a row our girls faced a huge test of their recent good form with the visit of local rivals Navan O’Mahonys to Simonstown and they did not disappoint.
Missing a few players from last week we had to reshuffle the team but it mattered little to these girls as they just carry on playing as a team regardless of what positions they are asked play.
From the throw in Simonstown took the game to O’Mahonys and following some great build up play the ball was moved quickly into Chloe Guinan playing at full forward from her usual half forward position and she slotted over a fine point which really settled any nerves. Within a few minutes O’Mahonys showed they were up for the game as well with an equalising point from a free. This score did not affect the girls however and with Aoishe Leddy carrying on her fine recent form and tagging on a point followed quickly by a fantastic goal Simonstown were looking dangerous every time they attacked. This was helped by some outstanding defensive play from Chloe Brady, Inessa Bardiukova, Ava Hynes, Caitlin Maguire and Emma Marriage who stopped several O’Mahony attacks before they got near our goals. O’Mahonys did however score a goal near the end of the first quarter but again our girls regrouped quickly and Aoishe scored another point to leave 2 points between the sides.
The second quarter was end to end with some great football by both teams but chances were few as both defences really got on top and the half time score was Simonstown 1-03 O’Mahonys 1-01.
The third quarter again absolutely flew by and while Aoishe kicked another 2 points to move Simonstown 4 points clear O’Mahonys came back strongly with 2 points of their own to again leave only 2 points separating the sides going into the final quarter.
The girls knew O’Mahonys would throw everything at them in the final quarter and so it proved but the back lines were again outstanding and with Aoibheann Brady playing so well in goals they managed to keep the forwards from scoring even if there were some near misses but the girls deserved any bit of luck they got such was the work they had put in. After surviving the early pressure Simonstown finally got to settle again and in the last few minutes of the game got back to moving the ball quickly up the field which resulted in a second goal for Aoishe and a fine goal for Molly Egan which left the full time score Simonstown 3-05 Navan O’Mahonys 1-03.
This was an absolutely outstanding team performance from Aoibheann in goals who made some stunning saves when needed and did not waste one kick out to the backs of Chloe Brady, Ava, Inessa, Emma and Caitlin who never gave their opponents an inch of time or space. Our midfield of Erin and Cara, who moved from her usual half back slot, were excellent and worked so hard helping the backs while making sure the ball was moved quickly into our forward lines. And our forwards of Aoishe, Molly, Hayleigh, Áine and Chloe Guinan who worked unbelievably hard to create scoring chances and at the same time tackled and fought for every ball to keep the game in the attacking area of the field.
I am sure the large crowd in attendance would agree they were treated to a fantastic display of football and we must say the O’Mahonys team played their part in making this such a great game.
Final word however must go to this young Simonstown team who now believe in themselves and each other and most of all are enjoying playing their football. It is a credit to them the work they put in in games and training no matter what is asked of them and their never give up attitude will bring them a long way.
Our final league game is a massive home game v Gaeil Colmcille and the girls would appreciate all the support they can get. The time and date will be confirmed later in the week.
