Quarter Final of the Under 21 Championship

Simonstown Gaels trailed by 7 points after 21 minutes and staged a remarkable comeback with goals from Ben Hoey, Sean Conlon and Michael Gavin.

The Gaels started the game sluggishly and were trailing by 7 points after 19 minutes of play. O’Mahonys looked hungry and were clinical from range in the opening exchanges. Sean Smyth, Craig Munnelly and Shane Doherty were impressive in the first half for the Brews Hill men. Simonstown struggled to curtail the potent O’Mahonys forward line. The Gaels looked devoid of ideas and they needed inspiration, this came in the form of Ben Hoey. Hoey from distance took a speculative shot. His effort ratteld the net and gave Simonstown some much needed encouragement. The North Side Blues now trailed by 3 points and this margin was quickly decreased when Sean Conlon ended a lung bursting run with a super shot that hit the roof of the net. O’Mahonys responded well and got 2 frees from scorable ranges. Munnelly and Sean Smyth dispatched the two frees with ease and this meant the Hoops were 2 points to the good at the halfway mark. Simonstown Gaels 2-3 (9) O’Mahonys 0-11.

O’Mahonys clinical touch deserted them in the second half and they only registered 1 point in the second half period. This solitary point was courtesy of Sean Smyth. The North Side Blues were reinvigorated in the second half and a flurry of points in the second half by the mercurial Eoghan Gough and Ben Hoey ensured the Gaels remained in the ascendancy. In truth the sending off of Evan Coffee had an influence on the result but the Gaels also responded very well to the sending off of Shane McHugh. Michael Gavin’s goal was the icing on the cake of a superb second half display. Next up is a formidable contest vs Ratoath. Date/Time/Venue TBC
