Trim - 4-8
Simonstown under 16’s kept their unbeaten run going after leaving St Loman’s park tonight with a draw in their second-round fixture of the summer league group A against Trim. The north side blues started brightly with a trademark Ben Gibney goal in the second minute. Trim responded with 4 points on the bounce followed by 2 from the blues. Trim then delivered the first of their goals in the 16th minute after being kept out with several point-blank saves by Jamie Mullen in goal. Simonstown bossed the remainder of the first half scoring 1-07 without reply.
If the first half was Simonstown’s then the second belonged to Trim. Within 4 minutes of the restart, Trim had pulled back 2-01. Simonstown halted the rally briefly with a well taken point by Peter Duffy. Trim scored another 1-04 before Simonstown’s next score, a point followed by another Ben Gibney goal which brought the scores level. Simonstown were awarded a free kick 30m in front of goal as time was nearly up but instead of taking the point, the boys went for goal as the referee incorrectly informed them that they were behind. The referee blew the whistle in the 38th minute of the second half and brought a pulsating game to an end. Both teams deserve huge credit for the quality of football and sportsman like behaviour.
Unusually, the county board have insisted that the summer league is 2-touch only and this really hampered the runners on both teams tonight.
Best for Simonstown were Jamie Mullen, Darragh Clarke, Josh Carolan, Adam Smith, Peter Duffy and Ben Gibney.
