 O’Mahonys Overcome Spirited Simonstown Challenge

Played in Parc Peadar O Briain on Sunday evening with Paul Mooney on the whistle, O’Mahonys emerged winners in this Division 4 second-round championship clash against Simonstown.

O’Mahonys were quick off the mark, registering two points (one from a free) inside the opening six minutes into the town-end goals. Simonstown responded through Cian Newman, who pointed from play after eight minutes. A minute later, Jack Dunne climbed highest in the O’Mahonys goalmouth to fist to the net, giving Simonstown a 1-1 to 0-2 lead with ten minutes gone.

Newman, with two frees, edged Simonstown ahead again by 1-3 to 0-4 after 22 minutes. But O’Mahonys then enjoyed a dominant spell, reeling off six points to move 0-10 to 1-4 in front approaching half-time. In added time, Newman struck three more (two from frees), leaving the sides narrowly separated at the break: **O’Mahonys 0-11, Simonstown 1-7**.

Early in the second half, O’Mahonys added another point before a goalmouth scramble in the Simonstown square led to a penalty, which was converted. That pushed the Brews Hill men five clear at 1-12 to 1-7 after 40 minutes.

Simonstown rallied with points from Joe Lyons and Newman (two, one free), reducing the gap to just two, 1-12 to 1-10, at the three-quarter mark. O’Mahonys replied with a pointed free and another from play. Shane Smyth and MacKenzie Doyle kept Simonstown in touch, leaving it 1-15 to 1-12 with seven minutes remaining.

However, two more O’Mahonys points stretched the lead again. In the dying minutes, Jack Collier weaved past three defenders and blasted to the net, cutting the gap to two, 1-17 to 2-12. As Simonstown poured forward in search of an equaliser, O’Mahonys broke at the death and found their second goal with the final kick, sealing victory.

**Final Score: O’Mahonys 2-17, Simonstown 2-12**

It was a brave and battling effort from a youthful Simonstown third team, who welcomed back to action **Eoin Crosby, Robbie Reid, and Luke Reid**.
